Manage Software Projects like a Business

Robert Martin has an interesting post over on Artima about managing software projects like a business.

The bottom line for agile methods is that they provide the data that makes managing software projects possible. They allow a software project to be managed like a business.

The only problem I have with Bob's post is that he is attributing the idea of the graphs to Extreme Programming. Actually it is SCRUM that initially proposed the idea of empirical process control with graphs such as that. Extreme Programming, at least in its current version 1 form actually has very *little* to do with management and much more to do with coding. That's great, but lets not make it out to be more than it is. Currently I am researching software development methodologies for my company and this is one of the most significant issues with XP.

Yeah I thought it was somewhat interesting as well that he pointed to extreme programming as the reason for having such metrics. Everything I've read/researched on XP has been very light in that area, with most of the focus on the coding aspect of the project. I haven't done much research in regards to SCRUM but based on your follow up to "The Skeptics View of Agile" as well as this post I think its safe to say that I need to get more familiar with it. Any recommendations on a starting point? I'd love to hear your findings in regards to software dev methodologies when your finished your research!
