Books for the programmer beginner

Does anyone have any recommendations on books for "beginner" programmers?  Although these aren't necessarily for the beginner the below list of books are the ones that came to mind when I started thinking about what I would recommend people read.

Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming by Jeffrey Richter

Shows how to write solid .NET code.

I second the Head First Design Patterns ... even one who is verse in patterns can still find fun and interesting information in the book.

Neither &quot;Refactoring&quot; nor &quot;Design Patterns&quot; are good for beginners.

I would have to suggest Steve McConnell's &quot;Code Complete 2.0&quot; as more useful for beginners. If only more beginners had read &quot;copy and paste is a design error&quot;...
