Developers as Athletes

A couple weeks ago a couple peeps in the blog world compared software developers to athletes.  As a former collegiate athlete I agree that the analogy is a good one...

Great developers and great athletes strive to be the best, and have the talent and drive to become so. The best developers are the ones who seek out help when they need it, and take steps to actively seek out learning opportunities on their own.

What I have a problem with is the fact that I feel nothing like an athlete because of trying to become a great developer.  Over the past couple months I've been feeling a sense of overall crapiness.  Weird chest thingies, strange heart happenings, and an overall sh**y feeling in general.  My self diagnosis is that I'm too friggin out of shape and need to start working out again.  To that end I decided to go for a nice little jog this afternoon.......OUCH!  I'm so ridiculously out of shape it's absurd.  So in summary....

Striving to become a great developer may prevent you from feeling like any kind of athlete, let alone a great one!

If you remember Jim McCarthy's "Dynamics of Software Development", he stated "Racehorses have to run". I always liked his analogy and felt the analogies for the roles of management and developers were right on the mark.

But I'd rather strive to be an athlete than a horse!

I worked from home for four years now. In Vermont. My boss is in Pittsburgh. I walk the dogs once a day. Beautiful but no great exercion there. Summer has arrived. I went blading twice this past week during warm afternoons. A start. Some biking. Still enough exercise. Its easier to code.

Crystal Winter days. Snow and blue skies. 30 minutes from the slopes, but I code head-down, through lunch, too much trouble to suit up and get out there.

I love my work, the more I do of it the more I want to do. But exercise and being physical, the transcendal highs that come with sweat. I want more of that, too. It will only benefit my coding, my employer, everyone.

I want to want to exercise as much as I want to code.

Working on it.

Feel better, Steve. Best regards - Dave

It's true that balancing exercise into your routine improves quality of life. Of course, getting fired because you spend too much time exercising and not enough time programming would take things too far . . . it's all about the balance. Sometimes we let the technology become an all-consuming endeavour.

I'm part of the organizing committee for this multi-sport activity: www.HRAdventure.com. It's not until late September and you've got time to get into better shape and come out and have a good time! It's more fun than competitive. I may even be able to find a team of like-minded techies-turned-adventure-racers for you to unplug with!
