Working for Microsoft

I've always thought it would be cool to work for Microsoft.  A big software behemouth that spends lots of cash on developing kick ass software, what could be better?  On top of that, how can one not be intrigued when MS is gobbling up talent left and right all around the blogosphere?  It must be "the place" to work if guys like James Newkirk, Ward Cunningham, Peter Provost and crew are taking the pill.

Maybe when they move the corporate office from Redmond to Philly I'll apply.    What I heard Bill likes Philly.  Unfortunetly I think the realization I had regarding my interviewing skills would keep me from getting very far.  Oh well, maybe some day....

I'm waiting for them to relocate to the SouthEast, preferably Atlanta. Maybe one of us will get that chance when that killer earthquake destroys Seattle and the rest of the west coast.

I did work for Microsoft. Not really by choice though. I started out of college at Solomon Software, who got gobbled up by Great Plains, who got gobbled up by Microsoft.

Due to "Job duplication" I was given the choice to pursue a position at Great Plains headquarters in FARGO, ND or in Redmond.

I was living in Ohio at the time where my family lives, so I decided to take my severance pay and walk.

I can tell you what I didn't like though... the thought of being on a commercial product stuck coding in a section of it. The same section day after day. I like a little more variety in my work.

I'd work for Microsoft, but not in North Dakota! I'd love a Program Manager position there, maybe on the ASP.NET or BizTalk or Content Management Server products (all C# baby!), or maybe something even newer like the auto software!

I'd love to work for MS, but definitely not Fargo! I live slightly south of fargo in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area and it's cold enough where I live. I don't need to live farther north.

I knew several .NET developers that contracted with the Great Plains/MBS group shortly after MS bought them out. They'd commute to Fargo (about a 4 hour drive) each week by bus and they'd ride th bus back at the end of the week. There's got to be a better way!

I thought I remember hearing the interview/HR team was blogging with sample interview scripts. Anyone else remember hearing this/know the link?

You think that, you would like to work at Microsoft but not in Redmond, etc. Well, let me tell you something. I live in Romania, and will relocate to the states, to Redmond, which is somehow across the globe, just to work at Microsoft. 10 hours difference between Romania, and West Coast, I would talk to my mother in the evening just before she lives for work. I would see her once a year.
